Development of Two Biomass Control Strategies for Extended ...

For stable longterm continuous operation of highly loaded trickle bed air biofilters, the prevention of plugging due to accumulating biomass is essential for avoiding biofilter failure. Two biomass control strategies were evaluated to maintain high VOC removal efficiencies at high toluene loadings for over 200 days. A sustained toluene removal efficiency of over 99% was achieved.

Microbial growth and substrate utilization kinetics

Microbial growth on and utilization of environmental contaminants as substrates have been studied by many researchers. Most times, substrate utilization results in removal of chemical contaminant, increase in microbial biomass and subsequent biodegradation of the contaminant. These are all aimed

Abstract. In this study, molecular techniques were used to identify bacteria in a laboratoryscale ammonia biofilter. Both 16S rRNA and ammonia monooxygenase ( amoA) genes were used to characterize the heterotrophic and ammoniaoxidizing bacteria collected from the biofilter during a 102day experiment.
